Pilates, Yoga, and Mobility Are Great—But They Don’t Replace Strength

There’s a movement happening in fitness right now—more people are embracing low-impact workouts like Pilates, yoga, and mobility training. And honestly? I love it.

At MVMT Strength, our biggest goal is simple: get people to move more. If Pilates, yoga, or other gentle training methods help someone build consistency, that’s a win in my books.

But here’s the catch: while these workouts are fantastic for mobility, core strength, and body awareness, they do NOT replace true strength training. If we want to build resilient bodies that stay strong for life, we need to lift heavy things, challenge our muscles, and progressively overload our training.

Let’s talk about why.

The Strength Training Gap in Gentle Workouts

Many of these lower-impact fitness programs do include resistance training, but it’s often limited to light weights or bodyweight exercises. While that can improve muscular endurance and core control, it’s not enough to build the bone density, muscle strength, and functional fitness needed for long-term health.

Lifting heavy improves bone density—crucial for preventing osteoporosis.
It builds real-world functional strength—so you can lift groceries, pick up kids, or get off the ground easily.
It increases muscle mass, which supports metabolism and longevity.
It strengthens grip, which is directly linked to overall health and lifespan.

Pilates and gentle movement support strength, but they don’t replace it.

Strength Training for Longevity: Kicking Ass in Your 90s

A coach I really look up to is Ben Bergeron, and one of the things he talks about often is his mission to help people “kick ass in their 90s.”

I love this SO much because at MVMT Strength, we don’t just care about longevity—we care about vitality. We want people to be able to stay active, move well, and truly enjoy life as they age.

One of the simplest tests of functional strength?
👉 Can you get up off the ground without using your hands?

This movement may seem simple, but it requires lower body strength, core stability, balance, and mobility. And the best way to ensure you can do this for decades to come? Lift weights, strengthen your legs, and train movement patterns that mimic real life.

This is where squatting with more than 5lb dumbbells, deadlifting, carrying heavy things, and building real grip strength come into play.

What Does the Research Say?

📌 Bone Density & Strength
Studies show heavy resistance training is one of the most effective ways to increase bone mineral density, helping reduce fractures and osteoporosis risk. (Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 2017)

📌 Muscle & Strength Gains
A study comparing low-resistance training (like Pilates) vs. high-resistance strength training found that heavier lifting resulted in significantly greater improvements in muscle strength, power, and hypertrophy. (Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research, 2015)

📌 Grip Strength & Longevity
Grip strength is directly correlated with overall health, cognitive function, and lifespan. Training with heavier loads (deadlifts, farmer’s carries, pull-ups) improves grip strength more effectively than lighter resistance methods. (American Journal of Preventive Medicine, 2015)

The Ideal Approach: A Blend of Both

💡 Pilates and gentle fitness are amazing for mobility, stability, and body control.
💡 Heavy strength training builds the raw power, bone density, and longevity we need for life.
💡 Combining both? That’s the ultimate formula for feeling strong and capable—now and into old age.

If you’re someone who loves Pilates or yoga, keep doing it! But if you haven’t added real strength training into your routine yet, now is the time.

At MVMT Strength, we help people build muscle, move better, and train for a strong future.

If you’re ready to train in a way that sets you up for strength, mobility, and vitality for life, our 4-Week Kick Start Program is the best place to begin.
