One of the most underrated parts of someone’s health and fitness journey has nothing to do with the actual workouts, nutrition, or discipline. It’s the support system around them.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen someone start their journey with excitement, only to be met with comments from friends or family that chip away at that momentum. Most of the time it’s not even intentional — it’s the small remarks like:
- “It’s just one drink.”
- “Come on, one cookie won’t kill you.”
- “You’re being ridiculous for skipping dessert.”
Now don’t get me wrong — I am not saying you should never have a treat. In fact, I believe balance is key and treats absolutely have a place in a sustainable lifestyle. But for someone who is just starting out, those little comments add roadblocks to what is already a very tough process. They’re trying to build new habits, find consistency, and maybe even face years of frustration with their health. The last thing they need is pressure from the people they love most.
The Second Phase: When Progress Shows
What drives me even more crazy is when that same person pushes through, starts to see changes, gains confidence, and maybe even begins sharing their wins — yet they’re still met with eye rolls or negativity. Instead of celebrating them, people act bothered or jealous.
Why does this happen? Sometimes it’s because seeing someone else succeed shines a light on where we feel stuck. It’s easier to dismiss their progress than to face our own discomfort. I’ll admit — I’ve caught myself in that mindset. But when I recognize it, I shift gears. Instead of resentment, I choose inspiration. If someone else can do it, that means I can too.
Your Role Matters
If you have a friend, spouse, sibling, or coworker who’s putting in the work, know this: your words matter. Your support matters. A simple, “I’m proud of you,” or even a high five can mean the world. You don’t need to understand every detail of their program — just cheer them on.
This isn’t about pretending they’re perfect or holding them to impossible standards. It’s about acknowledging the effort it takes to show up for themselves, day after day, when it would be so much easier to quit.
Why I Love This Work
Nothing makes me happier than seeing our members at MVMT Strength start to post more on social media, share a workout win, or talk openly about their nutrition goals. To me, it’s a huge sign of confidence. They’re proud of what they’re doing, and they should be.
So next time someone you know takes a step toward improving their health, be the kind of person who makes that path easier, not harder. Celebrate their progress. Encourage their effort. And if you feel that little twinge of jealousy? Flip it. Use it as motivation for your own growth.
At the end of the day, supporting someone else’s journey doesn’t take anything away from yours. In fact, it makes the whole community stronger.
So let’s just be nice. 👏
