Want to Burn Fat? Don’t Just Do More Cardio…

If your goal is fat loss, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking the solution is more cardio. Running, spinning, HIIT—you name it. And while cardio absolutely has its place, here’s the truth most people don’t hear enough:

👉 Lifting weights is one of the most effective things you can do to lose body fat.

Let’s break down why—and why I can personally relate.

From Someone Who Loves Cardio… I Get It

Over the past few years, I’ve really prioritized running. It’s been an amazing journey—training for marathons, chasing endurance goals, and yes, doing a lot of cardio.

So trust me when I say: I completely understand the desire to just do cardio.
It makes you sweat. It makes you feel like you worked hard.
It’s fast, efficient, and gives you that endorphin high.

But here’s the hard truth:
Sweat does not equal a better workout.
It doesn’t guarantee fat loss.
And it definitely doesn’t mean you’re building the strength your body needs long-term.

That’s why, despite how much I’ve focused on running, I’ve always made it a mission to keep strength training part of my routine.

Because I know it’s the key to:

  • Staying injury-free
  • Improving performance
  • And actually looking and feeling strong

Why Cardio Alone Isn’t the Best Fat Loss Strategy

Cardio burns calories—but it doesn’t build muscle. And muscle is the secret weapon for burning fat sustainably.

Here’s why cardio-only approaches often fall short:

  • When the workout ends, so does the calorie burn
  • You risk losing muscle along with fat
  • You don’t get the shape or strength that comes from resistance training

When your only plan is to “sweat more,” you’re missing out on the real engine of fat loss: muscle.

What Strength Training Does Differently

Builds Lean Muscle = Higher Metabolism
The more muscle you have, the more energy your body burns all day long—even when you’re just chilling.

Burns Fat, Not Muscle
Strength training helps preserve muscle while shedding body fat, especially when paired with proper nutrition.

Shapes Your Body
You can lose weight without strength training—but it’s lifting weights that gives you that toned, defined look most people want.

Regulates Hormones and Supports Fat Burning
It helps your body use carbs more efficiently and supports better hormonal balance.

Grows Confidence + Consistency
Nothing feels better than getting stronger—and that confidence flows into every area of your life.

Do You Still Need Cardio?

Definitely. At MVMT Strength, we program smart, intentional conditioning to support your goals. But we also know cardio shouldn’t be your only focus—especially if fat loss or building lean muscle is the goal.

Lifting 2–3 times per week, alongside some movement you enjoy (like running or walking), is a winning combination.
